Srinagar: Questioning how three motorcycle borne gunmen could killed senior journalist Shujahat Bukhari in broad day light in heart of the Srinagar on Thursday , senior Congress leader Prof Saifuddin Soz asked police to show its mettle and arrest the killers at the earliest.
Prof Soz, who visited the residence of Bukhari to express condolence with the bereaved family today, said the assassination of Bukhari was a heinous crime.
In a statement here this afternoon former Union minister Soz said “The people of Kashmir are deeply shocked and astonished as to how three motorcycle-borne killers could commit this kind of crime within the premises of press colony in broad day light”.
“Since the most active militant outfits in the State have declared that they were not involved in the crime, the people of Kashmir rightly expect that the J&K Police will show its mettle and nab the killers, at the earliest”, he demanded.
He said here was a man (Bukhari) who realized, in full measure, that the people of Kashmir suffered greatest miseries due to hostility between India and Pakistan. It was, therefore, he who was restless and missed no opportunity to emphasize that a purposeful dialogue between India and Pakistan together with the people of Kashmir was the only way forward.
While he put in a vigorous effort to promote dignified peace, he remained magnanimous and courteous to all manners of people. In his death, he established the fact that he was loved and respected by a vast number of people belonging to a cross-section of society, Prof Soz said.
