Srinagar: Jamait-ul-Vida, the last Friday of Holy month of Ramadhan, was celebrated with religious fervour and gaiety in Kashmir valley and Ladakh region, including Drass — the coldest place in the world after Siberia.
However, Shia sect of Muslims celebrated the Eid-ul-Fitr in Ladakh region, marking the end of holy fasting month of Ramazan, with religious ferver and gaiety.
Lakhs of people thronged Mosques, shrines and other religious places to offer the Friday prayers, on the occasion of Jamait-ul-Vida. The government had also announced holiday today.
However, the main congregation was held at Hazratbal shrine on the bank of Dal Lake, which houses the Holy Relic of Prophet Muhammad.
Several lakh people, including women and children, from different parts of the valley, participated in the prayers. The authorities have made all arrangements, including water, medical aid, power and transport arrangements for the devotees.
Hundreds of vendors had put up their stalls outside the shrine, selling eatables and other articles. A number of organisations and departments had also set up medical and other camps for the assistance of devotees.
Similar congregation was also organised at the historic Jamia Masjid, where chairman of the moderate Hurriyat Conference (HC) Mirwaiz Moulvi Umar Farooq addressed the devotees.
Jamait-ul-Vida congregations were also held at other shrines and Mosques, including the shrine of Hazrat Mehboob-ul-Aalam, Hazrat Syed Sahib Sonawar, Charari-e-Sharief and Sheikh Dawood Batamaloo.
Reports of celebration of last Friday of the holy month were also received from Kargil, Leh, Drass and other places in Ladakh region, where the members of Shia sect of muslims celebrated Eid today.
