Srinagar: Body of a soldier, who went missing in a snow avalanche in December 2017 in Nowgam sector in frontier Kashmir district of Kupwara, was recovered after melting of snow.
An Army official told UNI that Sep Shammi Singh and another soldier Sepoy Koushal Singh went missing after slipping from a mountain following avalanche, triggered by heavy snowfall at Nowgam sector on December 11.
He said the body of Sepoy Koushal Singh was recovered on December 16. However, they said after searching the area for the body of Sep Shammi for several days, the operation was called off.
“As the snow has started to melt due to the arrival of summer, the search operation was against launched and the body of the martyr was recovered on Wednesday,” he said.
He said General Officer Commanding (GoC) of Northern Army Command Lt Gen Ranbir Singh and all ranks salute the supreme sacrifice of Sep Shammi and offer deepest condolences to the family.
Besides these two, three soldiers were killed in a snow avalanche that hit Army’s Mani Post at Bagtoo in Gurez sector on December 12. A porter, working with Army, also slipped to death from a mountain top due to slippery conditions following fresh snowfall in border town of Gurez on December 11.
In January last year, 14 soldiers were killed in two snow avalanches which hit an Army post and patrol party in Gurez sector.
