SAMETI-J organizes 3-day training prog on ‘Urban Agriculture’

Jammu: State Agricultural Management and Extension Training Institute (SAMETI-J) organized a three-day training program on ‘Urban Agriculture’ which concluded Friday at  SKUAST-J Chatha.

Around 40 participants from Agriculture, Horticulture, Floriculture, Animal Husbandry and Fisheries department attended the training program.

Director SAMETI-J/Extension, Dr. K.S. Risam emphasized upon participants for maximum interaction during training for effective awareness among urban people about ‘Urban Agriculture’.

He also discussed characteristics, multi-dimensions and different Urban Agriculture production syste

Head Vegetable science and Floriculture, Dr. R.K Gupta delivered a lecture on container gardening for growing vegetables and herbs under urban agriculture.

Prof. Environmental sciences, Dr. Raj Kumar Rampal emphasized that urban waste management, its proper disposal and treatment will definitely reduce health hazard and provide manure, electricity and gas at cheaper rates to urban poor families.

Professor Extension Education SKUAST-J, Dr. Rajinder Peshin, emphasized on “Extension strategies for promotion of Urban Agriculture”

Other experts Dr. Rama Kant Sharma, Dr. Kiran Kour, Dr. Sahar Masud, Dr. Nazam Khan, Sunil Kakru and Puja Nayyar spoke on hydroponic food/fodder production, prospects of fruit cultivation in urban areas, potential of ornamental flowers/plants, urban Animal Husbandry challenges and potential of ornamental fisheries which will help in poverty alleviation, food security, and local economic development.

The participants were also taken for an exposure visit to Raj Bhawan Jammu to acquaint them with the cultivation of the fruit Orchard, Cactus Garden and Flowering plants and also polyhouse cultivation of Cucumber, Tomato, Capsicum and Nursery seedlings in waste plastic cups in complex of Directorate of Agriculture Jammu.
