Srinagar/May, 10:Senior BJP leader and former Deputy Chief Minister Nirmal Singh was on Thursday though elected as Speaker Assembly but after settling a controversy with the opposition parties.
Reports said that as the house assembled to elect the new speaker assembly the opposition members demanded rejection if the nomination papers of Dr Nirmal Singh submitted by him before the issuance of a notification for the election. Amid uproar in the house the Deputy Speaker Assembly Nazir Ahmed Khan Gurezi adjourned the house for half an hour.
Before the house re=assembled the issue was settled with opposition and Nirmal Singh was elected Speaker as the opposition not having the required numbers in the house did not participate in the voting. Opposition did not vote for Usman Majeed who was fielded to contest the election against Nirmal Singh and straightway skipped the voting. After his election as a Speaker Assembly Nirmal Singh was escorted to the chair by Chief Minister Mehbooba Mufti and Minister for parliamentary affairs Syed Basharat Bukhari.
