Srinagar/May, 5: A CRPF officer was injured in a gunfight with militants that erupted after government forces launched cordon and search operation in Chattabal area of Srinagar on Saturday, police said.
Following a tip-off about the presence of militants in the area, government forces including state police and Central Reserve Police Force (CRPF) personnel surrounded Gasi Mohalla, said SSP Srinagar Imtiyaz Ismail Parrey.
“As the forces tightened the cordon, the holed-up militants fired at them triggering the gunfight,” said an official.
Two militants, including the district commander for Lashkar-e-Toiba Mehraj ud din Bangroo, are believed to be trapped inside a house.
An eye witness said that intermittent exchange of fire was going on.
Meanwhile, clashes erupted in the interiors of Chattabal after youth staged protests and tried to march towards the site of the gunfight.
