Srinagar: The Ladakh region remained cut off from the Kashmir valley for the fourth successive day on Tuesday due to accumulation of fresh snowfall and slippery road conditions while the 86-km-long historic Mughal road and the 300-km-long Srinagar-Jammu national highway are through.
Traffic remained suspended on 434-km-long Srinagar-Leh national highway, linking the Ladakh region with Kashmir, a traffic police official told UNI.
There was fresh snowfall at Sonamarg, Zojila, Zero-point, Meenmarg and Drass, the second coldest place in the world after Siberia, last week forcing authorities to suspend traffic, he said.
The Border Roads Organisation (BRO), responsible for the maintainance of the highway have already pressed into service sophisticated machines to put through the highway. This year the highway was reopened for traffic early this morning after remaining closed during winter due to snow and slippery road conditions.
Meanwhile, the Moughal road, connecting Shopian in south Kashmir with Rajouri and Poonch in Jammu region, was through for only one-way for Light Motor Vehicles (LMVs). Today traffic will ply from Shopian to Bufliaz , he said no vehicle will be allowed from opposite direction. The road is still very narrow at several places and vehicles had to pass through huge snow walls.
The national highway, connecting Kashmir valley with the rest of the country was also through traffic, he said.
However, LMVs will ply from both Srinagar and Jammu while heavy vehicles will continue to ply one-way only. Today HMVs will ply from Srinagar to Jammu and no heavy vehicle will be allowed from opposite direction, he said.
However, he said people are requested to undertake the journey on the highway only after confirming the status of the road from Traffic Control Units (TCUs) set up in Srinagar, Ramban and Jammu.
