Srinagar: With the remove of Armed Forces Special Powers Act (AFSPA) from Meghalaya and majority of Arunachal Pradesh by the centre, moderate Hurriyat Conference (HC) chairman Mirwaiz Moulvi Omar Farooq asked New Delhi to remove the ‘draconian act that has played havoc with the lives of people living in the valley.
“For the past 30 years draconian &oppressive #AFSPA has played havoc with our lives. Time & again we have demanded its withdrawal. If GOI can remove it from its North Eastern territories, this cruel &merciless power bestowed upon 8 lakh Indian Forces in J&K should be revoked immediately!,” Mirwaiz wrote on micro-blogging site twitter.
The AFSPA has been removed completely from Meghalaya and its area of operation in Arunachal has been restricted to only three police stations bordering Assam and three districts neighbouring Myanmar.
