Jammu/April,18:President Ram Nath Kovind who arrived Jammu on a two day visit Wednesday morning has said that the said the Kathua gangrape-and-murder of an eight-year-old girl in Kathua earlier this year was shameful.

“After 70 years of independence, such an incident occurring in any part of the country is shameful,” he said during his visit to Shri Mata Vaishno Devi Trust University in Jammu today.

“We have to think what kind of society are we developing. It is our responsibility to ensure such a thing does not happen to any girl or woman,” he said.

Kovind arrived today in Jammu on a two-day visit to the winter capital of Jammu and Kashmir.

The eight-year-old from a minority nomadic community had disappeared from near her home in a village near Kathua in Jammu region on January 10.

Her body was found in the same area a week later.

The state police’s Crime Branch, which probed the case, filed a main chargesheet against seven persons and a separate chargesheet against a juvenile in a court in Kathua district last week.

The chargesheet revealed chilling details about how the girl was allegedly kidnapped, drugged and raped inside a place of worship before being killed.
