Uncertainty deepening in Kashmir: Tarigami

Srinagar: While expressing serious concern over the spate of killings in Shopian and Anantnag districts yesterday, CPI (M) leader and MLA Kulgam Mohammad Yousuf Tarigami Monday said that uncertainty was deepening in Kashmir and time has come when political leadership at all levels needs to go for political introspection.

In a statement issued here today, he said the unfortunate killings in Kashmir have been now limited to death count only. There is a need to have human approach which can pave way for durable peace in Kashmir. But for that political leadership in India and Pakistan, whether they are in opposition or government, need to have a political approach to solve this long pending political problem. But, unfortunately, Kashmir has always remained victim of domestic compulsions for both Indian as well of Pakistani leadership.

The current unrest in Kashmir is the result of deep and massive alienation caused by long history of broken commitments, repression, socio-economic woes and denial of justice to the people. Treating the present unrest and turmoil in Kashmir, merely the offshoot of “cross border terrorism” and denying the fact that it is rooted in history has proved counterproductive. It has resulted in hopelessness, despondency and loss of confidence in the political leadership.

Despite repeated insistance by the civil societies that dialogue is the only way to move forward to find solution to this problem, but there is no realisation and seriousness among the Indo-Pak leadership and different varieties of leadership in Jammu and Kashmir regrading the initiation of this process. The policy adopted by BJP-led government in New Delhi is that they view everything through the prism of security and with rabid nationalistic overtones. With security-oriented approach overtaking the political outreach, the biggest loser in this game have been the people of Kashmir.

This kind of casual irresponsibility has only compounded the crisis further. Everyone seems to have settled down to the usual rhetoric’s. It is high time that the political leadership of different colours both governmental and in opposition must seriously introspect and find out the options to resolve the issue through credible process of structured dialogue.

We appeal all the democratic voices to assert so that the cycle of terror and counter-terror is put to an end to and bloodshed in Kashmir is stopped.

We also appeal to the civil society, intellectuals, media fraternity to come forward and make meaningful contributions in opening of communication within the society which can help in evolving autonomous voices for seeking solutions to our problems. (GNS)
