Bandipora: The Department of Sericulture Bandipora Wednesday organized a district level Kissan Gosthi under Agriculture Technology Management Agency (ATMA) scheme at Sericulture farm here.
The program was aimed at to provide technical know-how to the participants and silkworm rearers for registering increased Cocoon production.
District Development Commissioner (DDC) Bandipora, Khursheed Ahmad Sanai, who was the chief guest on the occasion, said the district has tremendous potential for mulberry plantation owing its natural resources. He appealed youth to involve themselves in sericulture to boost the sector in the district. He directed the concerned officers to conduct awareness programs in different areas and sensitize people about various welfare schemes.
The DDC was informed that during current fiscal 41000 Kgs of Cocoon has been recorded in the district which generated an income of Rs. 90 lakh for silkworm rearers.
The District Sericulture Officer, Peerzada Khursheed Ahmad briefed about the activities of the department. He said 720 mulberry units have been established under private sector in the district while as 4 departmental nurseries also exist where from mulberry saplings are being distributed among silkworm rearers.
During the camp, cheques worth Rs. 50,000 were also provided to beneficiaries under Catalytic Development Program for construction of rearing houses.
Among others, Chief Agriculture Officer and a large number of progressive farmers were present on the occasion.
