Srinagar: A complete shutdown was Monday observed in Chrar-e-Sharif town of Central Kashmir’s Budgam district to protest against the non-completion of Chrar-e-Sharif shrine, shopping complex and “unscheduled” power cuts.
All the shops, business establishments, educational institutions remained closed in the town while the vehicular movement was also thin on the roads.
Reports reaching here said the shutdown and protest call was given by Alamdar traders union, Sheikh ul Alam Falah-o-Behbood committee, Youth Action Committee, Tehsil Mazdoor Union, Alamdar Transport union and Sumo and Taxi stand association.
The protest to press the government over demands was held at four places in the town including Zaloosa area, New Bus stand, Old Bus Stand and Gulshan Chowk.
The protesters raised slogans in favour of their demands and demanded immediate fulfilment of their demands.
The protesters said that the works to renovation and construction work on Chrar-e-Sharif shrine and shopping complex in the town is being executed by Jammu and Kashmir Projects Construction Corporation. “The work on the shrine is ongoing since last 20 years while as the work on shopping complex is ongoing from past 15 years but the authorities executing the work have failed to complete it,” they said.
During the protest, the Additional Deputy Commissioner visited the spot and assured the protesters that their genuine demands will be fulfilled.
Exen PDD, Mechanical department, Wali Muhammad also visited the protesters and assured them that the power crises they are facing will be looked into. “I have assured the protesters that their demands will be fulfilled till Apr 17,” he said.
