Srinagar: A Two Day National Workshop on Remote Sensing and GIS for Natural Resource and Environmental Management concluded Saturday at SP College Srinagar.
The workshop was organised by the Department of Environment & Water Management and PG Department of Environmental Science of SP College Srinagar in collaboration with Department of Ecology, Environment and Remote Sensing J&K.
Fifty delegates representing Dept. of Higher Education and Dept. of Remote Sensing and also one hundred P. G. students participated in the workshop.
Saturday the workshop started with a lecture by Dr. Shah e Jahan Wani Head Dept. of Electronics, S. P. College Srinagar who explained the concepts of emissivity and its use in remote sensing. This was followed by a lecture by Dr. Yunus Ali, Assistant Professor Dept. of remote Sensing and GIS, AMU, Ali garth who gave an elaborate lecture on the conventional and remote sensing methods for measuring depth profiles, suspended solids and chlorophyll ‘a’ in coastal and lake environments. He explained how large scale remote sensing data can be generated by using remote sensing and GIS methods and how rapid assessments can be made for the purpose of management of aquatic resources.
Afterwards an extensive lecture was conducted by Majid Farooq Scientist JKDEERS Srinagar who provided extensive examples of applications of remote sensing and GIS in health services availability, watershed flow simulation, forest fire risk zonation, vegetation mapping and biodiversity zonation, wildlife habitat mapping, disaster management with examples for flood management and earthquake assessment, climate change etc.
The technical sessions were chaired by senior faculty members of the college including Dr. Farooq Ahmad Rather HoD Physics, Dr. Farooq Ahmad Mir HoD Zoology, Dr. Yunus Ali AMU, Aligarh and Khurshid Ahmad Parry HoD Geology.
At the end of the workshop a grand valedictory function was organised in the auditorium of the college which was graced by Prof. Yaseen Ahmad Shah registrar Cluster University Srinagar, Prof. Manzoor Ahamad Lone Principal S. P. College Srinagar, Gh. Hassan Mir Mass Media Officer JKDEERS Srinagar, Zahoor Ahamad Mir DFO, JKDEERS Srinagar and Dr. Yunus Ali Assistant Professor Dept. of Remote Sensing and GIS AMU, Aligarh.
The workshop report was presented by Dr. Roohi Mushtaq HoD Biotechnology and the vote of thanks was delivered by Gowhar Hamid Dar.
