South Kashmir shuts for 2nd day against Shopian killings

Srinagar: All the four districts of South Kashmir observed a complete shutdown against Shopian civilian killings. Some areas of Pulwama district including Awantipora, Tral and Pampore observed shutdown to mourn the killing of Jaish-e-Muhammad Commander Mufti Waqas who was killed in a brief encounter at Hatipora Awantipora on Monday evening.
Reports said that all the four districts of South Kashmir including Shopian, Pulwama, Anantnag and Kulgam observed a complete shutdown. All the shops and business establishments remained shut while transport also remained off the roads.
Authorities have already ordered the closure of schools and colleges till Wednesday. High speed mobile internet also remained suspended across South Kashmir.
Coaching centres and petrol pumps also remained shut in these four districts. Large contingent of Forces personnel were deployed on the roads to thwart possible protest marches against civilian killings.
Meanwhile, hundreds of villagers in Pinjoora and Pahnoo hamlet of Shopian staged massive protest demanding removal of army camp.
The protesters said that the army camp in village Pahnoo is a nuisance. They demanded immediate removal of this camp.
Reports said that clashes erupted between protestors and Government Forces near DC office in the district.
Scores of youth took to streets and clashed with the forces deployed in the area. Forces in response lobbed tear smoke shells to disperse the protesting youth.
Meanwhile, normal life was affected for some time in old Srinagar city. Reports said that group of youth enforced shutdown in Nowhatta and blocked the road for traffic. Following the incident, large contingents of government forces personnel were deployed in the area to maintain law and order.
