Srinagar/Feb,19: A “mentally-challenged” man shot dead by the government forces outside the Air Force Station in Budgam has been identified as Syed Habibullah, a resident of Soibugh village of the district.

Local sources confirmed the death of Habibullah, a resident of Astanpura locality of the village. They said that the deceased had left his home yesterday.

He is survived by four sons and a daughter. “All of them are unmarried. He was living in extreme penury,” they said.

In a statement, earlier today, a police spokesman had said that a “mentally-challenged” person was shot dead after he entered the security zone area at Air Force Station Budgam around midnight.

“He crossed the security fence and came close to the station perimeter wall. Despite repeated warning from the sentry the individual did not stop. The sentry fired some warning shots in air but the individual did not stop. The sentry fired towards him,” said the statement.

“Spot examination revealed that the individual of about 50-55 years of age who appears to be mentally challenged has died in the incident. The person being identified is not wearing foot wears, is without proper winter clothing and has no identity card.”
