CRPF trooper killed in Srinagar gun fight

Srinagar: A Para-military CRPF trooper was hit by a bullet and killed during a gunfight in Karan Nagar area of Srinagar.
CRPF claimed that they foiled a Fidayeen attack in the heart of Srinagar city during wee hours of Monday.
Reports said that two armed militants tried to sneak into Karan Nagar based CRPF camp, however, the security guard shortly after observing their movement fired upon them.
The incident occured at 4:30 of Monday morning. The gun shots created panic in the area while combined forces launched a search operation and established contact with the militants during morning hours.
An official said that 2 militants carrying pithu bags and armed with AK 47 approached towards 23 Battalion CRPF camp in Karan Nagar. However, Sentry observed their movement and immediately opened fire. The militants entered into an under constructed building.
The troopers evacuated people residing near the encounter site while lobbed a couple of tear-smoke shells to disperse protesters who tried to assemble on the road.
During the early exchange of fire, a CRPF man identified as Majid Khan was killed while a police man also suffered injuries.
An official said that building has been completely sealed while all efforts are on to either apprehend holed up militants or neutralize them. He said that it will be premature to say anything about the number of militants present in the building.

Meanwhile, Minister for Revenue, Parliamentary Affairs, Abdul Rehman Veeri informed the house that a CRPF personnel has been killed in the ongoing encounter between militants and security forces in Karan Nagar area of Srinagar.
Giving details of the incident, the Minister said that at about 4:30 am on Monday, a sentry at CRPF 23 Battalion Headquarter Karan Nagar Srinagar spotted two militants carrying Pithu bags & armed with AK 47 rifles and opened fire due to which the militants escaped towards a nearby locality.
The Minister said at about 10 hours, while conducting search in the area, the search party was fired upon near Gole Market Karan Nagar which was retaliated leading to an encounter. He said the militants have been cornered in an abandoned house near 23 Bn CRPF headquarters and the encounter is still on.
