Jammu: Speaker J&K legislative Assembly Kavinder Gupta celebrated Lohri festival with the prisoners of District Jail Amphalla.
He also inaugurated a retail outlet “Sudhar Bikri Kendra” for the marketing and sale of products manufactured by prisoners near District Jail in presence of DGP Prisons S.K Mishra.
The `outlet has a wide variety of products like candles, bed sheets, readymade garments, handicrafts, wooden furniture, cushion covers and many more being items manufactured by the prisoners.
On the occasion, Speaker was informed that all these products are manufactured by the jail inmates after undergoing vocational trainings and are available at very low prices as compared to the market.
Speaking on the occasion, Speaker applauded the efforts of the Jail Administration and said this initiative has been taken to meet the twin objectives of enabling prison inmates to earn livelihood while serving in jails and after completing their sentences and to project the reformation programs run in the jails. He appreciated the quality work done by the prisoners .
DGP Prisons S.K Mishra, on the occasion, said earlier such products were put to sale at a small shop which has now been upgraded and converted into “Sudhar Bikri Kendra” after receiving overwhelming response of the people
Speaker extended his warm wishes to the jail authorities, other staff and prisoners. A cultural program was presented on the occasion along with Bhajans, lohri folk songs, traditional Haran to highlight the significance of Lohri.
Besides others, DIG Prisons Dr. M.S Lone, Senior Superintendent Javeed Masood Fazili, Senior Superintendent Dinesh Sharma, Superintendent District Jail Udhampur Rajni Sehgal and senior officers of the departments were also present on the occasion.
