Jammu: Governor N.N. Vohra and First Lady  Usha Vohra participated in the Christmas Gathering organised at the Carmel Convent School, last evening.

Wishing everyone a Merry Christmas and a happy and prosperous New Year, Governor observed that such joyous occasions kindle feelings of understanding and togetherness which are essential for harmonious and peaceful coexistence.

Governor lauded the role being played by the Catholic Christian Missions in spreading quality education in the State and hoped that they would continue to provide educational opportunities to children, particularly those from the disadvantaged sections of the society. He observed, with appreciation that it is more than a century since the missionaries lit the lamp of knowledge in the State and, presently, the Diocese of Jammu and Srinagar is providing education through 35 schools in the State.

Governor stressed the crucial importance of youth being provided with value based education which, he observed, is essential for imbuing them with moral, ethical and cultural values. He emphasised the importance of insulating children from the immoral and unethical influences and activities.

Governor and the First Lady, along with other dignitaries, joined in the Christmas cake being cut on the occasion.

The program, which started with prayer dance, comprised reading from the Bible, followed by a short prayer by  Sebyanti Surin form St. Mary’s Garrison Church, Gandhi Nagar and carols sung by students from Carmel Convent school and Presentation Convent school.

The Welcome Address was given by Rev. Fr. Jose Vadakkel, Vicar General and the Christmas Message was given by Most Rev. Ivan Albert Pereira, Bishop of Jammu-Srinagar.

Prof. R.D. Sharma, Vice Chancellor, University of Jammu, who was Guest of Honour, lauded the services being provided by the missionaries in the educational sector.
