Srinagar: On International Human Rights Day, authorities arrested several Hurriyat leaders and imposed severe restrictions in Old city parts and other areas that crippled the normal life. The commercial hub Lal-Chowk was a no go zone as police had laid barricades on the entry and exit points towards the city center.
A protest march towards UNMOGIP office that was to be led by JKLF Chief Yasin Malik was also foiled after the resistance leader was arrested from Maisuma locality here.
However, Malik read the memorandum the joint resistance leadership (JRL) had prepared to submit with the office bearers of UNMOGIP posted here at Sonwar.
According to KNS correspondent, Malik had gone under-ground few days ago and appeared today at Masjid Shaikh Hamza (RA) from where he went to Maisuma to take out protest march.
Meanwhile, a complete shutdown was observed today when world is observing international human rights day. The JRL had called for complete shutdown to protest “criminal silence of international community over Kashmir rights situation”.
Hurriyat Conference (G) chairperson, Syed Ali Geelani and Hurriyat (M) Chairman Mirwaiz Umar Farooq were put under house detention at their respective residences. (KNS)
