CEC Kargil calls for proper care, proportionate nutrition measures for better soil health

Kargil: Chairman and Chief Executive Councillor LAHDC Kargil,  Kacho Ahmad Ali Khan has called for taking up proper care and proportionate nutrition measures to ensure better soil health for satisfactory crop production and growth.

The CEC stated this while addressing a farmers’ camp organized by Krishi Vigyan Kendra (KVK) Kargil at Chutumail in connection with World Soil Health Day here Tuesday.

Executive Councillor for Agriculture Muhammad Hussain, Program Coordinator KVK, Kargil Akhone Mehdi, scientists of KVK besides officers of the line departments were also present on the occasion.

The CEC while urging upon farmers to strive hard to make their agricultural practices productive and profitable, underlined the need to adopt efficient application of correct types and amounts of manure and fertilizers for the supply of nutrients, he said adding this could be an important part of achieving profitable yields.

Kacho said soil testing is being undertaken by KVK Kargil in different parts of the district and exhorted upon the farmers to test their soil regularly and use manure and fertilizers as per the recommendations of the experts so as to achieve better production.

Kacho also directed the officers of KVK and line departments to conduct awareness programs for farming community regarding soil health at regular intervals, so as to apprise them of the scientific techniques in the balanced use of fertilizers and organic manures. Kacho said such steps would on the one hand help in increasing productivity besides ensuring the proper maintenance of soil health.

The CEC while reiterating the commitment of the Council for uplifting the socio-economic condition of the farming community said agriculture is among the priority sectors of the council and a number of welfare schemes have been initiated in this regard.

Earlier the officers of line departments and scientists of SKUAST enlightened the farmers about the importance of soil health and soil testing facilities as well as various measures like the use of organic manures in highest proportions, proper aeration, ploughing, tillage and adoption of mulching in water deficient areas.

The speakers on the occasion also highlighted the introduction of sprinkle and drip irrigation in water-deficient areas of the district on the lines of the areas at LahaulSpiti district of Himachal Pradesh and procurement of gypsum to reduce the alkalinity of soil in various areas of the district.

Deputy Director Command Area Development Kacho Muhammad Ali Khan, District Horticulture Officer Ali Raza, Pomologist KVK DiskitDolkar and Plant Pathologist Nasreen Fatima besides a large number of farmers from different parts of Soth area were present on the occasion.
