Srinagar: Hurriyat (M) chief Mirwaiz Umar Farooq on Tuesday appealed the international human rights organizations to take note of torture of several Kashmiri prisoners in New Delhi’s Tihar jail.
“Physical torture of Kashmiri inmates in #TiharJail, is a clear violation of fundamental, human and legal rights of prisoners who have been subjected to severe beating by the jail authorities. We appeal @UNHumanRights, @amnesty @ICRC to take strong note & intervene in this matter,” tweeted the Mirwaiz.
On Monday, the Delhi High Court ordered an enquiry after an advocate Chinmay Kanojia, through a Public Interest Litigation (PIL), alleged that his client Shahid Yusuf – son of Hizb chief Syed Salahuddin – currently being investigated by the National Investigation Agency and undergoing trial, was beaten up without any reason by the Tihar Jail staff. “We need to take a call. It (the incident) is completely unjustifiable. If this is the situation in Delhi, what about other places,” a bench of acting-Chief Justice Gita Mittal and Justice C Hari Shankar remarked.
It said that the issue was “extremely serious” and required a “serious probe”, before an intervention by this court.
