Srinagar/Nov,q5: Hurriyat (M) chairman Mirwaiz Umar Farooq and Jammu and Kashmir Liberation Front (JKLF) Chief Yasin Malik were detained on Wednesday after they tried to hold a sit-in in Lal Chowk area of Srinagar.
Witnesses said that the Mirwaiz and Malik were detained along with dozens of workers in Abi Guzar after they tried to march towards Lal Chowk.
Earlier, the duo addressed a press conference outside the JKLF office in Abi Guzar where they asked people to observe Nov 27 as a black day.
Mirwaiz Farooq said the continuing harassment of people in south Kashmir by forces in the name of operations against militants was condemnable.
They also voiced concern over the plight of Kashmiris detained in different jails outside the Kashmir Valley.
They criticized Chief Minister Mehbooba Mufti for saying that some people were first stoking agitations and later lining up for administrative favours.
“This statement proves she has no connect with the ground realities,” Mirwaiz Farooq said.
The leaders called for a shutdown on Nov 27 to protest against the “ill-treatment” of political prionsers in various jails in Kashmir and outside.
Both the leaders were shifted to Kothi Bagh police station.
