Though half of the private vehicles plying on different routes in Srinagar city have moved to Jammu the winter capital of the state where the move offices including civil secretariat after their shifting from Srinagar open in Jammu Monday this week and consequently people expected easy move of vehicular in Srinagar but total negligence shown by traffic cops in regulation of traffic has instead of reducing the traffic congestion increased the intensity of frequent traffic Jams in Srinagar city. Ironically the traffic cops are missing on main chowks in the city where round the clock the traffic regulation is necessitated by the increasing frequency in frequent Jams and consequently the people driving vehicles at the main chowks violate traffic signals. Ironically even the traffic jams caused by the violation of traffic signals in the middle of four way crossing points particularly at Bemina, Hyderpora , and Sanantnagar don’t attract the attention of the traffic police department in the city centre areas. Traffic advisories are though issued by the traffic police department but traffic cops are found missing on most of the four way crossing points in uptown Srinagar. The review of the traffic regulation measures at high level meetings by Divisional Commissioner Kashmir was though a welcome measure for smoothening of traffic movement is Srinagar but without ensuring follow up on decisions taken at the review meetings the regulation of traffic can’t be improved. It is the SSP traffic (City) who has to take care of the follow up on the decisions taken for improvement in traffic regulation at review meetings held under the chairmanship of the divisional commissioner Kashmir.
Unless and until the divisional commissioner Kashmir does not direct the traffic police department to give him daily feedback on the implementation of traffic regulation measures, the traffic congestion woes of the people will continue to mount with every passing day.
Ultimately it is the divisional commissioner Kashmir who has to oversee the implementation of the decisions on traffic regulation measures taken at traffic review meetings held under his chairmanship and rather divisional commissioner Kashmir has an institutional and administrative responsibility to fix the responsibility on the concerned officers of the traffic police department for their failure in implementing the new traffic regulation measures. Traffic cops are seen only stopping private and passenger vehicles for routine traffic checking but very rarely they are seen regulating traffic on city roads particularly at four way crossing points in Srinagar. The unprecedented rise in the frequency of traffic jams shows that divisional commissioner Kashmir is not bother to take the issues of traffic regulation serious enough to call up the concerned officers of traffic police department for their brute failures in regulation of traffic on city routes. Unless and until the divisional commissioner Kashmir does not direct the traffic police department to give him daily feedback on the implementation of traffic regulation measures, the traffic congestion woes of the people will continue to mount with every passing day.
