Srinagar: While a complete shut down called by joint resistance leadership (JRL) against the landing of army at Srinagar airport on October 27,1947 hit normal life across Kashmir, the law enforcing authorities imposed restrictions in seven police station areas in Srinagar city to prevent separatist-sponsored protests to mark the Accession Day of Jammu and Kashmir with the Union of India.
Joint resistance leadership (JRL) of separatist leaders comprising Syed Ali Shah Geelani, Mirwaiz Umer Farooq and Yasin Malik — had asked people to observe October 27 as a “black day” in Kashmir.It was on this day in 1947 that the Indian Army landed at Srinagar Airport.”Restrictions under section 144 of CrPC will remain in force in Nowhatta, M.R.Gunj, Safa Kadal, Rainawari, Khanyar, Kralkhud and Maisuma,” a police officer said. Authorities also disallowed congregational Friday prayers for the fifth consecutive week at historic Jamia Masjid Srinagar by imposing restrictions in the area. Hurriyat (M) chairman Mirwaiz Umar Farooq who addresses the faithful at the mosque every Friday has been placed under house arrest.
Restrictions were imposed in Rainawari, Safa Kadal, Nowhatta, Khanyar, Maharaj Gunj, Rainawari and Maisuma in Srinagar to prevent protests in these areas.The Joint Resistance Leadership (JRL) had called for a shutdown and had asked people of Kashmir to observe ‘Accession Day’ day as a ‘Black Day’.
Heavy contingents of the state police and Central Reserve Police Force (CRPF) in full riot gear were seen disallowing pedestrians and vehicular movement in these areas. Railway services in the valley were also been suspended on Friday as a precautionary measure. Meanwhile, a complete shutdown is being observed across Kashmir valley on the call of JRL . All shops and other business establishments are closed in city centre Lal Chowk while public transport is off the roads
