High-end mended Radiation Centre inaugurated in SMHS hospital Sgr

Srinagar: Minister for Finance, Labour and Employment, Dr. Haseeb A Drabu along with Minister of State for Medical Education, Asiea Naqash Saturday inaugurated the mended Radiation Center with latest equipments in SMHS hospital which was damaged in 2014-floods.

On the occasion addressing the jam-packed audience at Government Medical College (GMC) auditorium, Dr Drabu laid stress on financial autonomy to hospitals like other educational institutions to avoid any hindrance in smooth functioning of hospitals.

He said, “Finance can’t be a restraint and we will have to find resources to provide quality healthcare people, and in this regard we will have to jointly design a mechanism to make hospitals financially autonomous”.

Finance Minister said the State is spending less than a percent of gross domestic product on health care which needs to be looked upon adding, “we should be spending at least 4 to 6 percent of domestic product on health care to upgrade its standards and measures are underway to revamp the system”.

He assured the Head Department of Radiation Oncology to provide them with the PET scan machinery by March next year.

On the occasion, Asiea Naqash assured the Department of every possible help so that quality treatment is provided to patients suffering from cancer and other diseases.

Principal Dean GMC, Prof. Samiya Rashid said the latest machinery will help the Centre to better treat the patients.

Cancer treatment equipments at the Centre include Rs 4.75 crore Equinox Cobalt Unit, Rs 3.7 crore C T Simulator and Rs 3.5 crore Brachy Therapy Unit.

It was said with the availability of this facility, most cancer patients will be treated at the hospital and some patients who were referred to outside stations will also be taken care of by the sophisticated and state-of-art equipment. The installation of the equipments would be completed by May-June 2018.
