Srinagar: A policeman was killed and two others injured on Saturday after militants attacked the motorcade of MLA Noorabad Abdul Majid Padder in Damhal Hanjipora area of Kulgam district in south Kashmir. Meanwhile police has blamed the Hizb ul Mujahideen for the attack on MLA Noorabad and claimed that MLA Noorabad was not the target.
Sources said that militants opened fire on two police vehicles at Nandimarg crossing in Damhal Hanjipora in Noorabad area. Both the vehicles skidded off the road, they said, adding that a policeman, identified as Constable Khurshid Ahmad of Pahlu Kulgam, was killed and two others injured.
“The policemen were returning from Daniv Kandimarg village where MLA Noorabad Majid Paddar inaugurated a medical camp,” he said.
The official said the MLA was present at Degree College Damhal Hanjipora, half a kilometer from the spot where the attack took place.
Meanwhile police has blamed the Hizb-ul-Mujahideen militant outfit for the attack on police vehicles in Damhal Hanjipora area of south Kashmir’s Kulgam district.
A policeman was killed and two others injured in the attack that took place at Nandimarg crossing. “Perpetrators behind this attack have been identified as Gulzar Paddar group and Umar Majid Ganie group of Hizbul Mujahideen outfit,” said a spokesman.
He also denied that the MLA Noorabad was the target of the attack.
“The news item regarding the attack on the Hon’ble legislator Noorabad is incorrect and is denied.” Giving details, he said that a police team on duty for medical camp, comprising the AST team and a bunker vehicle while returning from duty was fired upon by the hiding militants at Nandimarg crossing.
“The police party retaliated to the attack and due to brave retaliatory action, police foiled the attempt of weapon snatching conspired by the militants,” said the spokesman.
During the attack, the driver of the AST vehicle Khurshid Ahmad Tak got injured in the firing of the militants.
Despite being injured he displayed conspicuous act of courage by successfully taking the vehicle out of arch of fire and saved life of others, he said.
