Though knowing it fully that war between India and Pakistan won’t take the two countries nearer to resolution of any unresolved political and military conflicts, the helmsmen in both New Delhi and Islamabad have triggered yet another round of the war of words just to deflect the attention of the people from the resumption of bilateral talks demand by the peace makers of both the countries and sovereign states possessing the capacity to facilitated the process of reconciliation in Insian sub continent. The only attitudinal change notice in the fresh round of the war of words between New Delhi and Islamabad is that this time not the political leadership but the top military man controlling and commanding the Indian Air Forces has triggered a war of words with the remark “ Indian Air Force is ready to open two war fronts with both China and Pakistan simultaneously” and the reaction to the provocative statement of Indian Air Force Chief has not come from military but the civilian leadership of Pakistan. An attitudinal change seen in the response of Pakistan is that the military leadership in Islamabad has left it for the civilian rulers to respond to threat statements of top army functionaries. Non intervention in the handling of bilateral relations by Pakistan army is a perceptible change in its attitude but the intervention of the top military functionary in the handling of bilateral relations and silence of civilian rulers is not a good omen for the future of democracy in India. Since the inability of the popular governments of Pakistan in enforcing political accountability of the military in that country is the one issue which the successive governments of India have been agitating at international forums, So the intervention of Indian Air Force chief in the handling of Indo-Pak bilateral relations shows the increasing role of military leadership of India in the handling of foreign affairs issues with the neigbouring countries.
If top India military leadership continues the new precedence of engaging itself in war of words with the top political functionaries of the neighbouring countries, it would sent out a wrong message on increasing influence of the military leadership in policy matters in India the country which boasts of being the second largest democracy in the world.
To ensure that military leadership is key away from the conduct of bilateral relations it has become imperative for Prime Minister Narendra Modi to ensure that top military leadership don’t not speak on foreign affairs issues which have a long lasting bearing on the regional stability in South Asia. If top India military leadership continues the new precedence of engaging itself in war of words with the top political functionaries of the neighbouring countries, it would sent out a wrong message on increasing influence of the military leadership in policy matters in India the country which boasts of being the second largest democracy in the world.
