Bandipora/Oct,5:A young woman Thursday morning foiled an alleged braid chopping attempt on her in Dangar Mohalla of Kaloosa area in Bandipora district in north Kashmir.

The family members of the woman (name withheld) said that an unknown person tried to cut her braid as soon as she came out of the washroom around 6 am.

“The unknown person had managed to enter inside our house and was waiting for her to come out of the washroom. When she came out, the attacker tried to catch hold of her and tried to chop off her hair with a knife,” they said.

A family member said that the woman (28) pushed him and raised an alarm, forcing the attacker to flee.

“We tried to catch him but he had escaped from the window of our kitchen,” he said.

The incident comes a day after Kashmir Police Chief Muneer Khan said that it was hard for the police to unfold the mystery behind the braid chopping incident as the victims were not ready to help them.

“How can we reach to truth when victims are not ready to record their statements? If they (victims) are not ready to talk to police about these incidents, how come they expect that police will unfold the mystery? It is unfortunate that victims are not ready to help the police,” Khan told a local news agency.

Police have so far been clueless about the dozens of hair cutting incidents that are being reported on daily basis from different parts of the Valley.

Earlier today, police doubled the cash reward on information leading to arrest of braid choppers. “Any person with credible information on braid choppers will be awarded Rs 6 lakh,” said an official.

A helpline has also been established so that “people could inform and seek assistance with regard to any braid cutting incident.”

To speed up the investigation process, Special Investigation Teams (SITs) have also been constituted in every district headquarters of the valley.
