16723 farmers insure Paddy, Maize crops under PMFBY in Kathua district

Kathua: Around 16723 farmers have insured their crops under Pradhan Mantri Fasal Bima Yojana (PMFBY) in Kathua district including 3398 for Maize crop and 13325 for paddy crop.

The insurance cases have covered sown area of 3387.34 hectare under Maize and 14536.33 hectare of paddy crop with Rs 61.039 crore assured sum at a premium cost of Rs 1.22 crore.

This information was given at a meeting chaired by District Development Commissioner   Ramesh Kumar and convened to review the progress achieved under PMFBY and other farmer centric schemes.

The DDC asked Insurance Company to extend cover to all farmers including those without KCC.

He called upon the field functionaries of revenue, bankers and insurance companies to make joint teams and hold camps across the district.

The DDC also devised a schedule for holding joint camps by revenue, bankers and insurance companies for enrolment of farmers. He said the purpose was to reach out to the door steps of the farmers and sensitize them about the scope of the scheme and its benefits. He directed the team to convey the timing of the camps in advance to the famers of visiting areas. He also called for providing all requisite documents to farmers during the camps. The procedure and registering of reported damaged crops shall also be ensured in the camps to save time of the farmers, the DDC directed.

He directed the teams to start enrollment of wheat crops for which a schedule has been prescribed starting from 15 October 2017 to December 2017.

The DDC called upon the agriculture and allied departments, banks, insurance company for focusing on vulnerable areas that get affected by natural disasters like floods, draughts, dry spells incessant rains, pests & diseases and hail stor  He said the Provision of individual farm level assessment for Post harvest losses due to the cyclonic & unseasonal rains of the crops kept in the field for drying upto a period of 14 days is also incorporated in the scheme to compensate farmers for their insured crops.

While highlighting the scheme, DC said it aims at to stabilize the income of farmers and ensure flow of credit to agriculture sector. He said the scheme will encourage farmers to adopt innovative and modern agriculture practices and minimize financial risks due to crop losses.

The meeting was attended by ADC Billawar Joginder Singh Rai, SDM Bani Ajeet Singh, ACR Kathua Jitendra Mishra, Tehsildars,   SDAOs, representatives of reliance insurance company and other officers.
