Jammu: Minister of State for Transport, Sunil Kumar Sharma Wednesday said State Motor Garage Department (SMGD) is going to install GPS devices in all vehicles to monitor the movement of its fleet.

The movement of vehicles would be monitored through a Traffic Control unit being established in the SMGD office building at New Plot.

The Minister said the initiative forms the part of government’s policy to enforce austerity and transparency in the working of departments. He said with the commissioning of the control unit the department can keep tab and maintain the record of the movement of its fleet including the vehicles   attached with different departments and constitutional authorities.

Meanwhile, the Minister laid foundation for construction of a new block to house the proposed Traffic Control Unit among other facilities.

The New block would be constructed by Public Works Department (PWD) at an estimated cost of Rs 48 Lakh.

Later, the Minister also listened to the demands of the employees of SMGD and assured to look into these sympathetically.

Commissioner Secretary Transport Department, Hemant Kumar Sharma, Director SMGD, Zakir Husain Chowdhary, Deputy Director SMVD Kashmir, Tariq Malik, Deputy Director SMVD Jammu, Syed Muarif Andrabi besides PWD functionaries and other officers were also present on the occasion.
