Srinagar: Friday congregational prayers were allowed at the historic Jamia Masjid after two weeks as there was no restriction in old Srinagar city areas Friday.
Meanwhile, the prayers at the historic mosque were led by Hurriyat Conference (M) chairman Mirwaiz Moulvi Omar Farooq.
However, immediately Friday prayers were over in Jamia Masjid, clashes erupted outside the mosque between security forces and protestors, who were stopped from holding a march against civilian killings in Kashmir valley.
Police said there was no curfew or restrictions in any part of Srinagar though security forces remained deployed at some places to maintain law and order.
Friday prayers were offered at Hazratbal shrine, which houses the holy relic of Prophet Muhammad, on the bank of Dal Lake.
Reports of Friday prayers being offered normally were also received from other parts of the Valley, where clashes erupted between security forces and protestors in the afternoon at some places.
Friday prayers were not offered in the Jamia Masjid on September 8 and September 15 after authorities imposed curfew-like restrictions in SeK and downtown Srinagar for security reasons.
Last Friday, curfew like restrictions were imposed to prevent protests against killing of Lashker-e-Toiba (LeT) chief Abu Ismail and his associate Abu Qasim in an encounter in city outskirts.
On September 8, restrictions were imposed within the areas falling under five police stations of Srinagar district to prevent protests after prayers against ethnic cleansing of Rohingya Muslims in the Rakhine state of Myanmar.
