Ang: Panic created at Boys Degree College Anantnag in South Kashmir when agitated students resented the tricolor hoisting and pelted stones on cops during the inaugural match of cricket tourney organized by Jammu Kashmir Police.
As per college sources inaugural match of T20 cricket tourney was in progress when some policemen hoisted Indian tricolor. This enraged the students who started shouting pro-freedom slogans. Some students resorted to stone-pelting forcing cops to take down the tricolor. This did not pacify the protesting students who continuously raised pro-freedom slogans and tried to attack the cops.
College sources said match was abandoned after the clashes. Cops used tear-smoke shells to disperse the protesting students. As cops left the premises, protesting students set the stage on fire and ransacked the chairs and other items.
Reports said that students also attacked the fire tender with stones. The fire tender had arrived in the College to douse the fire, but came under severe attack. Police again rushed to spot and charged the students with canes.
A cop wishing anonymity said that they were supposed to hoist a sports flag. “Whatever happened was inadvertent,” he said.
Reports said that the cricket tournament was inaugurated later in the evening and the first match was played without any disturbance.
