Srinagar: Deputy Chief Minister Dr Nirmal Singh Tuesday asked for a coordinated effort in order to ensure the effective implementation of the ban on polythene and its related products.

The Deputy Chief Minister   was speaking at a meeting convened to discuss the measures to be taken for ensuring a complete ban on polythene. Minister for Rural Development Abdul Haq Khan was also present.

The meeting was also attended by Commissioner Secretary Housing and Urban Development     Hirdesh Kumar, Deputy Commissioners, Director Urban Local body, Vice Chairman, LAWDA, SDA, Commissioner SMC, DPOs, ACDs and other senior officers.

While asking for taking the necessary measures for ensuring the effective implementation of the ban on polythene, the deputy chief minister said the same is very necessary for maintaining the fragile environment and ecology of our state. He said the government is ensuring every possible step in order to preserve the eco-system of the state and the execution    of the ban of the product would go a long way in supplementing the initiatives of the government.

Dr Singh said the Swachta campaign started by the Prime Minister, has been instrumental in ensuring the cleanliness in our rural areas and cities and the onus lies on us to ensure its implementation and the ban on the polymer should also be taken as a part of the program started by our premier.

He said we should all collectively synergize our efforts to ensure the implementation of the polythene ban and people should also contribute their bit. He said they should change their shopping habits by doing away with the tendency of taking their shopping items in polythene bags and explore the possibilities of having other bio-degradable shopping bags.

Minister for Rural Development Abdul Haq, while speaking on the occasion highlighted the measures undertaken by the rural development department in ensuring that the use of polythene is stopped in the rural areas of the state.

He said the necessary instruction has already been conveyed to the district officers and District Panchayat officers to ensure the effective implementation of the ban and necessary headway has been achieved in the endeavor.
