New Delhi: Finance Minister Arun Jaitley today introduced The Central Goods and Services Tax (Extension to Jammu and Kashmir) Bill, 2017 and The Integrated Goods and Services Tax (Extension to Jammu and Kashmir) Bill, 2017 in the Lok Sabha. Jaitley also tabled two explanatory statements showing reasons for immediate legislation by promulgation of the two Ordinances.
The militancy-hit Jammu and Kashmir, the only state to miss the GST rollout on from June 30-July 1 mid-night, joined the new tax regime on July 7 after the state Assembly passed a bill in this regard. The Jammu and Kashmir Goods and Services Tax Bill 2017, moved by the state Finance Minister Haseeb Drabu, was adopted by a voice vote in the absence of Opposition parties in the assembly. The Congress and National Conference accused the PDP-BJP government of undermining the special status of the state.
