Bandipora/July,26:Angered residents of Lawaypora village of North Kashmir’s Bandipora district Wednesday staged a massive protest demonstration against the arrests of four persons who were opposing the installation of high-voltage power transmission lines in residential areas.
The protestors blocked Bandipora-Sopore road amid anti-administration slogans. Hundreds of vehicles including school buses were stranded because of the protest.
“Police have arrested four persons on the directions of deputy commissioner Bandipora as the villagers are opposing the installation of high voltage transmission towers in the residential area. Instead of listening to our genuine concerns, the district administration has arrested four villagers,” said a protestor.
National Hydro-electric Power Corporation is installing high voltage transmission towers in Lawaypora, Khayar and other villages as part of 330 mega watt Kishenganga Power Project.
The villagers of Lawaypora have been demanding installation of tower outside the residential area to avoid any untoward incident.
