New Delhi: In what was an imminent outcome, BJP-led NDA nominee for Presidential poll Ram Nath Kovind today trounced joint Opposition candidate Meira Kumar by a huge margin of 3.
34 lakh votes to move to the country’s highest office next week.
Mr Kovind, the 72-year-old Dalit leader of the BJP, who was Governor of Bihar before his nomination for election to the top Constitutional post, would be the 14th President of the country when he takes over from incumbent Pranab Mukherjee in Rashtrapati Bhawan on July 25.
Ms Kumar, who also hails from the same community as Mr Kovind, had been nominated by the 17 Opposition parties after the BJP had announced its candidate.
Ms Kumar and her supporting Opposition parties, including the Congress, had described the Presidential election as a fight of ideologies to preserve the democratic and secular values of the country, while the ruling BJP had maintained that election for the country’s highest post was above ideologies.
