Srinagar: Barring one all Members of Legislative Assembly (MLAs) in the Jammu and Kashmir cast their votes for election to the 14th President of the country here today.
The polling for election to the office of President of India started here today at 1000 hrs under the supervision of Chief Electoral Officer, Jammu and Kashmir, Shaleen Kabra, and Election Observers from Election Commission of India.
Assistant Returning Officers and Authorized Agents of the contesting Presidential election candidates were also present during the election process.
Polling was conducted smoothly throughout the day and till the time of the conclusion of polling 86 MLAs out of the total 87cast their votes.
Former Jammu and Kashmir Chief Minister and working president of the opposition National Conference (NC) Omar Abdullah was among the first to cast his vote when the polling began here at 1000 hrs.
However, media persons were not allowed to go inside.
J&K has 87 votes and each vote has a value of 72 as per the population census of 1971 which will continue till 2026.
Therefore the total value of votes for Jammu and Kashmir is 6,264.
The NDA candidate Ram Nath Kovind and UPA candidate Meira Kumar visited the Kashmir valley to seek support from the MLAs.
