New Delhi: The Reserve Bank of India Governor Urjit Patel today appeared before the Parliamentary Standing Committee on Finance here to explain to the members about the demonetisation issue. According to sources, Mr Patel was asked to give his oral evidence on demonetisation and “transformation towards digital economy”.
Mr Patel has earlier appeared before the Public Accounts Committee of Parliament as well. Mr Patel had earlier, however, sought exemptions from attending the meetings of the panel headed by Congress MP M Veerappa Moily. Earlier, he was invited by the committee for appearing on May 25 and June 8. In today’s meeting, Mr Patel is expected to be grilled by members on the “challenges” faced in the banking sector in the country and and the way forward.
The panel members are likely ask Mr Patel on how much money has “come back into the system” after last year’s November 8 decision of the government to ban old Rs 500 and Rs 1000 currency notes. The RBI Governor had first appeared before the standing committee on Finance in January.
