Demand for ‘Separate Gorkhaland’ resonates in Delhi, stir at Jantar Mantar

New Delhi: After passing through West Bengal, the demand for “separate Gorkhaland” today echoed in the national capital with hundreds of Gorkha Sanyukt Sangharsh Samiti workers protesting at Jantar Mantar for fulfillment of their demand. The protestors enthusiastically campaigned in support of their demand for a ‘separate Gorkhaland’ and against alleged atrocities committed by the West Bengal government. The protest started from Rajghat and then reached Jantar Mantar.

The workers of the samiti stated that they would not settle anything less than a “separate Gorkhaland” therefore, if the government wishes to talk on any other issue besides the separate Gorkhaland one, it is advised not to indulge in any. The samiti workers are of the view that akin to other people , Gorkhas too are an integral part of India, therefore making such a demand was their prerogative and there was nothing wrong in it. The “Gorkha agitation” has acquired quite an aggressive nature for the past one month in Darjeeling. But matters got worse last Friday with the discovery of corpse of a Gorkhaland supporter Tashi Bhutia in outer area Sonada of Darjeeling. Gorkha Janmukti Morcha claims that its worker’s death occurred in police custody.

The spokesperson of the Morcha, Neeraj Zimba has accused the police of shooting its supporter due to which he succumbed on the spot itself. Zimba says that shot wounds were found on Bhutia’s head near the ear region. He also disclosed that around 10-15 police personnel gheraoed armless Bhutia and then committed his murder which is sheer barbaric. Zimba also clarified that Section 144 was not implemented in the the area from which the deceased was passing and in that scenario, anyone is free to travel anywhere across the country. Many members of ‘Gorkha Jan Mukti Morcha’ addressed people during the protest and announced that they would continue the stir till their demands were met.
