Srinagar/ July,7: Authorities on Friday imposed curfew-like restrictions in parts of Srinagar city and south Kashmir districts of Pulwama and Anantnag to prevent protests marking the death anniversary of Hizbul Mujahideen commander Burhan Wani.
Wani was killed last year in a gunfight with government forces in Anantnag district’s Kokernag area.
A 54-day unrest followed Wani’s death in which nearly a hundred civilian protesters were killed and thousands others injured.
All senior resistance leaders have been either detained or placed under house arrest to prevent their participation in the valley-wide protests.
District Magistrate Srinagar Farooq Ahmad Lone has issued orders to impose restrictions in areas falling under the jurisdictions of Rainawari, Nowhatta, M.R. Gunj, Khanyar and Safa Kadal police stations in the city.
Restrictions under Section 144 CrPc have also been imposed in south Kashmir districts of Pulwama and Anantnag.
Our correspondent in Tral Irfan Malik said a strict curfew has been imposed in the township where resistance leaders are planning a a rally on the maiden death anniversary of Wani.
“Curfew was announced by police vehicles around 5 am today,” he said, adding that police and paramilitary forces have erected barricades at the entry and exit points of the town to foil any rally.
Reports received from Anantnag town said forces have blocked roads with rolls of concertina wire to limit the pedestrian and vehicular movement.
Meanwhile, mobile Internet services have been restored in parts of Kashmir after a 12-hour gag.
