Srinagar: Police on Monday claimed to have arrested 54 youth during past few months who were planning to join militant ranks.
“With the arrest of four boys from Kupwara, police has arrested 54 youth and foiled their attempts to join militancy, thereby saving 54 families getting adversely affected by the militancy,” said a police spokesman.
He said 54 youth were arrested from different districts of the Kashmir zone during last few months.
“Out of these, 28 youth have been arrested in the districts of Baramulla, Kupwara, Sopore, Handwara and Bandipora of the North Kashmir Range,” said the spokesman.
“Thirteen youth have been arrested in Central Kashmir Range Srinagar while equal number of youth has been arrested in district Pulwama, Anantnag, Shopian, Awantipora and Kulgam of South Kashmir.”
Police arrested four boys who were attempting to cross the Line of Control (LoC).
On 27 June, Police Station Kupwara received information that four boys of village Gulgam had gone missing.
“Following the information, a general alert was sounded across the district and two teams were constituted to trace out them,” said the spokesman.
“During search, one of the teams intercepted these boys near a nallah in dense forest close to the LoC and they shifted them to Police Station Kupwara.”
They were identified as Shahid Ahmad Pir son of Mohammad Amin, resident of Pir Mohlla Gulgam, Wahed Ahmad Gojri son of Mohammad Sultan, resident of Deldjan Gulgam, Zeeshan Ahmad Lone son Ghulam Rasool Lone resident of Tanwari Gulgam and Ubaid Ahmad Gojree son of Abdul Razaq resident of Tanwari Gulgam.
“Though arms and ammunitions are recovered from many of the arrested youth, yet some of them are handed over back to their families after counseling,” said the spokesman.
