New Delhi/Srinagar,May 26: Former Punjab top cop KPS Gill, who is credited with having played a big role in eliminating terrorism from Punjab, died here in a private hospital. He was 82. Governor N.N. Vohra has expressed grief on the passing away of Gill.
Gill, a former Director General of Punjab Police, was suffering from end-stage kidney failure and significant ischemic heart disease.
“He had been recovering from peritonitis but died of sudden cardiac arrest due to cardiac arrhythmia”, said a statement from Sir Gangaram Hospital where he was undergoing treatment. He died at 2.55 p.m.
He was admitted to the hospital on May 18.
Gill, who was known as ‘supercop’, was DGP of Punjab Police between 1988 and 1990 and came back to the post again in 1991 and held it till retirement in 1995.
Meanwhile Governor N.N. Vohra expressed grief on the passing away of K.P.S Gill, former Director General of Police, Punjab.
In a message to the family the Governor paid rich tribute to Gill’s altogether fearless leadership and recalled the grave unrest in Punjab, during the period the Governor served as the State Home Secretary, when Gill’s services were procured on deputation from Assam to combat the arising challenges in Punjab. Gill served Punjab for several years leading from the front and made valuable contributions in bringing insurgency under control.
The Governor has prayed for eternal peace to the departed soul and wished his family the strength to bear this sad loss.
