Srinagar/May,12: Minister for Public Works Naeem Akhtar Friday called for utilizing the space available under the under-construction Jehangir Chowk-Rambagh flyover in a way that it will add aesthetics, social and commercial value to the city.

The Minister was speaking at a meeting called to explore ideas for developing the space under the 2.5 km flyover connecting Barzulla with Jehangir Chowk. He said the flyover when complete won‘t be seen as a concrete monster but a vibrant living space of various aesthetic activities. The meeting was attended by Director ERA, CEO ERA, State Convener of the Indian Trust for Art and Cultural Heritage (INTACH) and other officials.

INTACH gave a detailed presentation on the possibilities to develop the available space under the flyover.  Drawing inspiration from various flyovers in India and Mexico, the presentation detailed which stretch of the flyover can be utilized for which activity without creating any hindrance to smooth flow of traffic.

The Minister directed the ERA officials to prepare a roadmap for the beautification of the space under the flyover. He said the flyover should become a place of opportunity for the residents living in its vicinity. He said the primary purpose of the flyover is to decrease traffic congestion in Srinagar and after fulfilling its purpose enough space is still available for development, which needs to be cashed.

The Minister said at some place where enough space is available an art gallery or even a hall for functions can be established. The Minister said the final plan for the beautification should be in tune with local architecture and needs of the surrounding community.  He said strict implementation of the beautification plan would be undertaken and book shops, coffee shops, vegetable & fruit vendors, fountains, children’s play space, public space would be added at appropriate places.

The Minister said the flyover is the entry road into Srinagar city which adds to its importance for beautification. He said the flyover will set an example for beautification of similar structures and in the second stage similar work on other flyovers in the state would be undertaken.
