Srinagar, May 11: Hundreds of students in several parts of Kashmir Valley today staged massive pro-Azadi and anti-India protests, triggering stone-pelting clashes that resulted in injuries to more than a dozen youth.
According to GNS correspondent, large number of students took to streets in Pulwama Town against detention of their mates in the wake of violent student protests. The students in the Pulwama Town pelted stones on government forces already deployed in the Town who responded by firing teargas shells.
Local shopkeepers of Pulwama Town said that police not only damaged their goods but also beat them. The shopkeepers staged massive protests against highhandedness of police. Eyewitnesses said police resorted to teargas shelling on shopkeepers’ rally, triggering further clashes. The shopkeepers have announced complete shutdown tomorrow against the police excesses and demanded transfer of “erring” officers. There was complete shutdown in Pulwama against the police.
Intense stone-pelting clashes also erupted at Magam town of Budgam district between students and government forces including army. Many students were injured as police used pellets and teargas shells. In Dooru area of Anantnag district, dozens of students clashed with police and staged pro-Azadi protests while expressing solidarity with their counterparts in lock ups.
In summer capital Srinagar, students of MP School and Gandhi College clashed with government forces after they took out a rally, shouting slogans in favour of Azadi. The students clashed with police along Baba Demb Road. Reports of massive clashes were also reported from Langate area of Handwara in North Kashmir.
Reports reaching here said that massive stone-pelting erupted in Sopore Town of Baramulla district between students and government forces. According to GNS correspondent, students of Degree College and Higher Secondary took out rally but were intercepted by police, sparking off massive clashes. Police used dozens of teargas shells to disperse the protesters.(GNS)
