For the first time in her over one year term as Chief Minister, Mehbooba Mufti has asked her ministers to either control corrupt in their concerned departments from bottom to top or face expulsion from the ministry. The remark good enough to encourage the people of integrity but a lot of questions concerning the presence of some people of doubtful integrity within Mehbooba Mufti’s own Peoples’ Democratic Party (PDP) remain unanswered. The Peoples’ Democratic Party is the only mainstream party which has kept doors open to retired officials of doubtful integrity against whom investigations into their involvement in multi crore scams are yet to be concluded. Ironically most of the retired officials against whom investigation into their involvement in multi crore scams is yet to concluded have been granted berths in the legislative council and many more such retired officials have been also gifted coveted appointment in some government owned Public Sector Undertakings (PSUs) and autonomous organizations. Though some present ministers have brought the government into disrepute by pursuing highly objectionable methods in transfers of officers and officials and allotment of works in some key departments but Chief Minister Mehbooba Mufti now talking tough against corruption can be asked that why she won’t start the war against corruption with the expulsion of those retired official against whom investigations are pending disposal in the premier investigative agencies of the state government. Chief Minister surely has the disqualification of providing political asylum to deadly corrupt retired officials and professional political defectors of the recent years. When it comes to war against corruption the Chief Minister is not at liberty to target people at the helm selectively but she has to apply a uniform yardstick to oust people of doubtful integrity from both the government and party posts.

As far as the war against corruption is concerned the successive popular governments promised but saw ministers and top bureaucrats taking corruption to unimaginable heights. Ironically the present PDP-BJP coalition government has brought bureaucrats of doubtful integrity facing trial in premier investigative agencies of the state on key positions in the top and middle rungs of the bureaucracy and sidelined many such bureaucrats whose integrity is stated to be above board. So if Chief Minister is really interested to show doors to corrupt, the axe has to fall on PDP’s such top party functionaries against whom cases are still pending in premier investigative agencies and the top bureaucrats holding key positions but yet to be exonerated by premier investigative agencies in land scams and cases of huge financial irregularities.
