New Delhi, May 4: After making Aadhaar mandatory for filing income tax return, the Government is mulling to link it to electricity bills also, so that the discoms can discipline its functioning.
Addressing the mediapersons at the biannual meet of State Power Ministers here, Union Minister of State for Power, Coal, New & Renewal and Mines Piyush Goyal said, “It is in the interest of consumers to connect Aadhaar Cards with their electricity bills; however, it is not mandatory to do so.
It is a state subject and we can only make suggestions.
” By linking Aadhaar to electricity bills, it could end the payment backlog and improve the revenue flow of distribution companies.
In his effort to make Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s vision of ‘electricity for all’, the minister said, “We are committed to provide 24×7 quality power supply to all households by end of December, 2018.
