New Delhi, May 4: The Supreme Court today reserved its order on whether to make Aadhaar mandatory to obtain a Permanent Account Number (PAN) and file tax returns.
A two-judge bench, headed by Justice Arjan Kumar Sikri and also comprising Justice Ashok Bhushan, asked all the parties concerned to file their respective written submissions by Tuesday.
Attorney General (AG) Mukul Rohatgi, appearing for the Union of India, had informed the apex court that Aadhaar is unique and could not be duplicated.
Counsel for various petitioners, however, argued that the entire system (Aadhaar) is not foolproof and can be duplicated.
On Tuesday, Rohatgi defended the Centre’s decision to make Aadhaar mandatory to file tax returns, citing that it was done to curb the use of fake PAN cards across the country.
