Jerusalem: Palestinians across the West Bank and the Gaza Strip on Thursday observed general strike in solidarity with about 1,800 hunger-striking prisoners and detainees in Israeli jails.
Public and private institutions, including schools and universities, shops, transportation and other facilities were all shut down, with the exclusion of health services and secondary school students.
The general strike was called for by the National Committee in Support of the Striking Palestinian Prisoners. Meanwhile, the Union of Transport Workers in Palestine announced the holding of a general strike across the districts of the West Bank and Gaza on Thursday.
The Palestinian territories are expected to witness wide-scale activities in solidarity with nearly 1,800 prisoners who entered their 11th consecutive day of hunger strike on Thursday to protest their dire detention conditions and ill-treatment by the Israeli prison authorities.
