Revival of Coop Societies to hel farmers in better marketing: Coop Minister

Jammu/ April, 17: Minister for Cooperatives and Ladakh Affairs, Chering Dorjay has said the government has taken innovative measures to revamp the activities of Cooperative Department for maximum benefits to the people of the State.

Dorjay impressed upon the functionaries of the department to make earnest efforts for revitalization of defunct cooperative societies besides implementing the schemes effectively launched by the government for the welfare of farming community.

Reviewing the overall functioning of the Department at a meeting held here Tuesday, the Cooperative Minister exhorted upon the field functionaries of the Department to work with vigor and ensure the marketing of various products to the consumers on reasonable rates.

Minister of State for Cooperative, Mir Zahoor was also present in the meeting. Commissioner Secretary Cooperative  Nirmal Sharma, Registrar Cooperative Bashir Ahmad, Additional Secretary Cooperative, Additional Registrar Cooperatives were among other senior officers who attended the meeting.

The Minister underscored the need for modernization of Cooperative societies and asked the concerned to take necessary steps in this regard. “Our motive is to provide better marketing to the produce of the farmers and making defunct societies functional should be the priority of the Department”, the Minister instructed.

The Minister asked the concerned to ensure marketing of organic fertilizers in the State, which he said has been already introduced in Ladakh. He said use of organic fertilizers is beneficial to boost agriculture production in the State.

Highlighting the importance of the department,  Dorjay advocated for registering new societies and making them active with those societies which are already registered.

Addressing the meeting, Mir Zahoor called for establishment of more cooperative societies in the State and also stressed upon the concerned to involve youth with the Cooperative movement so that they earn their livelihood through self reliant societies. He asked the department to take new initiatives and improve the working skills of the members of the societies so that they can earn more.

Mir Zahoor instructed the concerned to recover the liabilities from the societies at an earliest.

The meeting discussed various matters regarding the revival of the functioning of the Department. Status of several issues like recovery under NCDC, Status of ongoing projects, refund of utilized amount to NCDC, reconciliation of accounts with NCDC, preparation of matrix for new projects for seeking financial assistance, expenditure of Capex budget, election of Cooperative societies  came also under discussion in the meeting.

Registrar Cooperatives in a power point presentation gave detailed resume of the activities launched by the Department for making it more commercial and vibrant. He also apprised the meeting about the financial health of the Department and about the new initiatives taken for the revival of cooperative societies.
