Srinagar, June 29 (UNI) Jammu and Kashmir Chief Minister Omar Abdullah on Monday termed the levy imposed on livestock-laden vehicles passing through Punjab as “unjust” and said he has once again urged his Punjab counterpart Bhagwant Mann to intervene and resolve the issue.

Jammu and Kashmir is staring at a mutton shortage as mutton dealers have suspended the transportation of livestock from Rajasthan in protest against the collection of taxes at checkpoints in Punjab. Traders maintain that they merely use the state’s highways for transit and neither purchase nor sell livestock within Punjab.

Omar Abdullah said that he has taken up the issue with Punjab government for past several months.

“I myself spoke to the Chief Minister of Punjab and told him that this is an injustice to our mutton traders,” Omar told reporters after attending “Jammu & Kashmir International Buyer-Seller Meet 2026” in Srinagar .

Chief Minister said the traders procure livestock from Rajasthan and transport it to Jammu and Kashmir without carrying out any commercial activity in Punjab. “They are only using the highway. Our mutton dealers should not be punished for using the highway. This tax is an injustice to our people,” he said.

Omar said he has again taken up the matter with Punjab counterpart Bhagwant Mann through a letter and expressed hope that the issue would be resolved amicably.

“If not, we will have to raise this issue in the North Zone State Council and seek the intervention of the Central government because this tax is an illegal tax. We are not buying or selling goods in Punjab, so there is no need for this tax,” he said.

Omar said Punjab and Jammu and Kashmir are neighbours and it is as such their duty to help.

“Bhagwant Mann sahib is our neighbour. It is the duty of a neighbour to help his neighbour. I hope he will help us in this matter. He is also going to have an election soon. We will also help him in some way,” he added.

Chief Minister also expressed optimism over the ongoing tourist season, saying popular destinations across the Valley are witnessing a steady inflow of visitors, but avoided commenting on whether tourist arrivals would surpass last year’s figures.

Asked if the number of tourists would increase this year, Omar said the focus should remain on the positive impact of tourism rather than statistics.

“Don’t talk about numbers. It is like shooting self in the foot by talking about numbers,” he said, adding that tourists are arriving in good numbers and major destinations such as Gulmarg and Pahalgam are witnessing heavy footfall.

“There is traffic congestion. Gulmarg is full. Pahalgam is full. People are earning. Let them earn,” the Chief Minister said.

He cautioned against placing excessive emphasis on tourist arrival figures, saying such comparisons were unnecessary during the ongoing season.

On escalating tension in Middle East, Omar Abdullah expressed hope that the understanding reached between the United States and Iran would pave the way for lasting peace, while cautioning that the conflict has not ended yet.

Omar said only a memorandum of understanding (MoU) has been signed and not a final peace agreement.

“The peace deal has not been signed yet. Only the MoU has been signed. There is a difference between the MoU and the final agreement,” he said.

He added that under the MoU, both countries have given themselves 60 days to work towards a final agreement, but hostilities have continued.

“The bombardment is still going on. Even yesterday, there was bombardment. There were strikes on Iran, and there was bombardment involving Kuwait and Bahrain. The war has not ended completely yet,” he said.

The Chief Minister said he hoped both sides would use the two-weeks window to consolidate the ceasefire and move towards a permanent resolution.

“I hope that in these two weeks, the MoU will be used properly by both the countries. No third country will sabotage this ceasefire, and this war should come to an end,” he said.

Latti (Udhampur, J&K), Jun 29 (UNI) Nestled amid dense deodar and pine forests, the picturesque and largely unexplored village of Latti in Chenani tehsil of Udhampur district is steadily emerging as one of Jammu and Kashmir’s newest tourist destinations.

Known for its lush green meadows, towering pine trees, cascading waterfalls, and serene surroundings, Latti is attracting nature lovers and adventure enthusiasts seeking to explore offbeat destinations.

Situated around 150 km from Jammu city, the village offers pleasant weather and breathtaking landscapes, making it an ideal destination for travellers seeking peace and natural beauty.

“Thanks to social media, Latti has finally come into the spotlight,” said a local shopkeeper.

“Tourists from the Jammu region as well as different parts of the country have started visiting the village,” he said.

However, locals believe that the area’s growing popularity must be matched with improved infrastructure.

Perched along the scenic Dudu-Basantgarh road, Latti serves as the first major stop for visitors heading towards the equally picturesque destinations of Dudu and Basantgarh.

Despite the growing tourist interest, residents say the region’s infrastructure needs significant improvement to support sustained tourism growth.

“Latti needs better tourism facilities, improved road connectivity, and stronger infrastructure,” said a resident. “Although road conditions have improved over the past few years, ongoing road widening and repair work should be completed quickly to accommodate the increasing number of visitors,” he said and expressed confidence that Latti, along with Dudu and Basantgarh, would soon become major tourist destinations in the region.

Located on the Dudu-Basantgarh road, Latti serves as the first major stop for tourists travelling towards these scenic destinations.

Popular attractions in and around the area include Manju Top, the revered Vasuki Nag Temple, Shivgali and several pristine waterfalls nestled amid dense forests.

“If you love nature and peace, you must visit Latti,” he said.

Another shopkeeper said the region has immense tourism potential and can earn a distinct place on the tourism map if properly promoted.

“Tourist footfall through Mantalai has increased significantly, and many visitors now prefer staying in this beautiful and unexplored destination,” he said. “Further development is essential to boost tourism and support local growth.”

Aryan Mahajan, owner of Hotel Diamond, said Latti is gradually gaining recognition as a tourist destination.

“Along with basic amenities, additional facilities should be developed to make Latti more accessible and popular across the country,” he said.

He stressed the importance of better road connectivity and called for more hotels, fuel stations, ATMs, and other essential services to support the growing tourism sector.

“The entire Udhampur region is blessed with unexplored destinations. Latti, Dudu, and Basantgarh are among the most beautiful places, and their tourism potential should be fully developed by providing the necessary facilities for visitors,” he added.

Mahajan also urged the government to promote the region by introducing adventure sports, cultural activities, quality eateries, accommodation facilities, and improved road infrastructure.

MLA Chenani Balwant Singh Mankotia said the government is committed to developing Latti as a major tourist destination.

“Latti is a beautiful place, and road connectivity is being improved,” he told UNI.

He informed that better roads and infrastructure remain a key focus in the constituency. “The four-lane highway from Sudhmahadev to Mantalai has already been sanctioned, and in the next phase, the Mantalai-Latti highway will also be developed.”

The MLA said the homestay concept has already been introduced in the area as part of efforts to boost tourism.

He also highlighted awareness programmes being conducted in schools, encouraging students to become ambassadors for promoting Udhampur’s unexplored destinations.

“Social media is one of the best platforms to showcase these beautiful places,” he said.

Appealing to travellers and nature lovers, Mankotia said, “We invite everyone to visit Latti, Dudu, and Basantgarh to experience the unmatched beauty, peace, and hospitality these destinations have to offer.”

Baramulla, June 29: Police in Baramulla refuted false and fabricated information circulating on social media alleging that terrorists had attacked a police station in Baramulla, opened fire on government offices across the town, and that the Chief Minister had proposed cancellation of the ongoing Shri Amarnath Ji Yatra.

In a statement, Police said that the claims are completely false, baseless and devoid of any factual basis. It said that no such terrorist attack or firing incident has taken place anywhere in Baramulla and that reports regarding the proposed cancellation of the Shri Amarnath Ji Yatra are entirely false and misleading.

Police said that the deliberate dissemination of such fabricated content appears to be a calculated attempt to create fear, spread panic, disturb public tranquillity and undermine public confidence during the ongoing pilgrimage.

In this connection, Police said an FIR has been registered and investigation has been initiated. It added that all necessary steps are being taken to identify those responsible for creating, publishing and circulating the malicious disinformation.

“Strict legal action shall be taken against all those found involved, including individuals who knowingly share or forward such false content with the intent of amplifying misinformation,” the statement said.

Police advised the public to refrain from forwarding or sharing unverified content on social media, stating that circulation of fake news not only creates unnecessary panic and disrupts public order but also attracts penal consequences under law.

The public has been urged to remain calm, exercise restraint and rely only on information disseminated through official government and police channels.

Srinagar, Jun 28: Kashmir Medical College and Hospital (KMCH), Sempora, on Sunday organized the Pulse Polio Immunization Drive and conducted an outreach campaign in nearby areas to ensure every child under five years of age receives the life-saving polio vaccine.

People from different areas of Sempora brought their children to the KMCH campus to administer polio drops as part of the Pulse Polio Immunization Drive. The initiative aimed to strengthen community awareness, encourage parents to complete their children’s immunization, and reaffirm the commitment to keeping India polio-free.

In her message, Executive Director KMCH, Insha Qazi, said that preventive healthcare remains one of the hospital’s top priorities and that initiatives such as the Pulse Polio campaign reflect KMCH’s commitment to safeguarding the health and well-being of children.

She said the institution is dedicated not only to providing quality medical care but also to actively participating in national public health programmes aimed at preventing vaccine-preventable diseases.

Qazi appreciated the dedication of the doctors, nursing staff, paramedics, and the Department of Community Medicine for successfully conducting the immunization drive and outreach campaign.

She urged parents to cooperate with healthcare workers and ensure that every eligible child receives the polio vaccine on time, emphasizing that sustained community participation is essential to preserving India’s hard-earned polio-free status.

Doctors from the Department of Community Medicine, along with nurses and other supporting staff, remained on their toes throughout the day to ensure the successful conduct of the Pulse Polio immunization drive.

The teams also carried out outreach visits to nearby communities, administering polio drops to eligible children and spreading awareness about the importance of vaccination.

Prof. Nazir Ahmad Khan, Principal, Kashmir Medical College and Hospital (KMCH), said: “We are observing Pulse Polio Day to keep India free from polio and ensure that every eligible child is immunized. I urge everyone to become part of this collective effort and support the campaign wholeheartedly.”

He said that the threat of the virus remains, as it can be imported from polio-endemic regions at any time. Therefore, we must remain vigilant and ensure that no child is left unvaccinated.

“This is not only our duty but also our moral responsibility to protect every child from this preventable disease,” he said.

Notably, recently the KMCH Sempora commenced comprehensive immunization services under the Government of India’s Universal Immunization Programme (UIP), marking an important step towards strengthening preventive healthcare services for the community.

SRINAGAR: The Lieutenant Governor, Manoj Sinha today launched the Directorate of Rural Sanitation’s “Shubham–Shivam” campaign at Baltal base camp. The Lieutenant Governor said the campaign is a massive step to achieve a sustainable, clean and zero-landfill Shri Amarnath Ji Yatra (SAJY). Along with a slew of eco-innovations, the Lieutenant Governor also unveiled the new website, pilgrimage anthem, logo, and mascot.
“The true backbone of this initiative is our incredible sanitation team. I am grateful for Karmyogi volunteers, whose relentless dedication will keep the base camp and both the tracks clean in the days ahead. They are the real heroes turning our zero-waste vision into reality, preserving the environment and the profound spiritual dignity of the Shri Amarnath Ji pilgrimage,” the Lieutenant Governor said.
He also stated that all the innovative initiatives of Directorate of Rural Sanitation rest on devotion and discipline, and they must be carried out conscientiously and responsibly by every stakeholder. The Lieutenant Governor said that the vision of Shubham–Shivam sends a clear message to every pilgrim, every langar, and every service provider on this journey that preservation of ecology and all its natural resources are a sacred duty.
“A clean, sustainable, zero landfill Shri Amarnath Ji Yatra is a firm declaration that despite the harshest geographical conditions, ensuring cleanliness is our collective responsibility. An outstanding example of this commitment is the “Trayambakam” mobile application. It is a simple, intuitive, and useful tool through which any pilgrim can send a photo of waste or litter at a location and ensure immediate action.
The circular economy initiatives are also highly commendable. The “Swaha” utensil bank, where steel plates and cups are used against a small security deposit, conveys to every pilgrim that convenience and environmental responsibility can go hand in hand.
The “Amarnath Seva Cafe” turns waste collection into an act of service and participation. Exchanging collected plastic for tea and snacks is not only a transaction but it signals that true devotion to Baba Barfani manifests through active participation in keeping the pilgrimage clean,” the Lieutenant Governor said.
He also announced the regulatory framework including four way segregation, a complete ban on single use plastic, and prescribed sanitation standards for each langar and camp to lay a strong foundation for environmental protection.
“Directorate of Rural Sanitation’s official logo, featuring Lord Shiva and 34 tridents arranged around him, reminds us that protecting this holy land and its environment is our shared duty. The pilgrimage anthem “Swachhta Dharma Hamara” will surely resonate in pilgrims’ hearts in the same way as Baba’s blessing and the echo of these mountains remain with them long after the journey ends. I extend my best wishes to the thousands of workers who will operate on these difficult routes in the coming days. Let us resolve today that Baba Amarnath’s sacred pilgrimage will be an unparalleled experience for pilgrims from across the country and abroad,” the Lieutenant Governor said.
Shri K.N. Rai, Member, Shri Amarnath Ji Shrine Board; Shri Nalin Prabhat, DGP J&K; Shri S.J.M.Gillani, Special DG Coordination PHQ; Dr. Mandeep K Bhandari, Principal Secretary to Lieutenant Governor and CEO Shri Amarnathji Shrine Board; Shri Anshul Garg, Divisional Commissioner Kashmir; Shri Rahul Yadav, Managing Director JKPDCL and Nodal Officer for Baltal Axis; Shri VK Birdi, IGP Kashmir; Shri Jatin Kishore, Deputy Commissioner, Ganderbal; Ms Anoo Malhotra, DG Rural Sanitation J&K and other senior officials attended the launch ceremony.
